Italy: Proposed Route

Posted by

I cannot think of a better place to celebrate our halfway point(ish) than the Italian coast. Who says Biking the Balkans needs to stay in the Balkans exclusively? We make our own rules so Western Europe.. here we come, kind of. As we did not originally intend on visiting Slovenia, we also never thought we would see Italy. As most planning does for trips though, things change in a flash. Looking at the map, we noticed how incredibly close Trieste was to Ljubljana, so we figured why not. Hey, I’ll take an excuse to eat Gelato and drink cheap wine any day of the week!

It’s a short trip through Italy that is more of a stopover than anything else. We enter into the country from Slovenia at Fernetti and follow the road through Villa Opicina to the coast at Trieste. We expect to spend a day or two soaking up some sun here before moving on east through Basovizza to the border at Pese di Grozzana. Boom… Italy is done. It’s only a 30 kilometer stretch that we are going to hit in Italy, yet it may take us 2 days since we might want a break in Trieste. Who knows though, we may also just plow through and keep trucking and come back to Slovenia that same day!
